Cadillac HQ Moves Out of Motor City

It appears the Motor City will have one less motor soon, as General Motors has announced plans to move its Cadillac brand from Detroit to New York City. Although the move will not change the location of the technical and product development teams currently based in Michigan, and GM is not moving Cadillac’s manufacturing and assembly operations out of Detroit either, GM does plan to establish the Cadillac brand as a separate business unit and move its sales and marketing…

American Dreaming – A Film on Auto Design from 1946 to 1973

The post-war period from 1946 to 1973 has often been identified as the highpoint of American automotive design, an era when rapid economic expansion fueled a growing middle class and the field of automotive design reached maturity. Following World War II, the auto companies had access to huge factories that had previously been used for wartime production. In response to growing demand, domestic automakers used the factories to expand in just about every way possible and that included pushing the…

Prime Time for Classic Car Investing

Although the recession knocked about 30% of the value out of the market for classic and collectible cars back in 2007, the economy seems to have recovered and values of classic cars have bounced back too. As we reported here earlier this month, the Hagerty Blue Chip Collector Car Index saw a 37.4% increase in value between December 2012 and December 2013. After such strong a performance in 2012, many experts expected the collectible auto market’s bubble would burst this…

Good News for Classic Cars

Anytime a market has more buyers than sellers, the value of the goods being sold will rise. In the case of the collector car marketplace, it appears that is exactly what is happening right now. The demand for desirable collector vehicles is at an all-time high today and the values (as well as prices) are definitely rising. Collecting, restoring, buying and selling collector cars has always been quite popular in the U.S., but the whole scene has seen a real…

The Sinkhole in the News – A Blessing in Disguise?

Everyone has heard about the Sinkhole by now. Back on February 12th of this year, eight Corvettes fell into a giant sinkhole at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky. It wasn’t the most threatening disaster in the news that week, but news of the sinkhole spread quickly and it was covered in detail by nearly every media outlet in the country, and along the way it captured the attention of the entire nation. Black is Back

A recent update from the California Division of Motor Vehicles regarding the state’s Legacy License Plate Program should make owners of vintage iron dating from 1963 to 1969 very happy. The California DMV has received the mandatory minimum 7,500 pre-orders necessary to kick start the production and distribution of retro-styled, black with yellow character license plates. The black plates were originally issued in the state between 1963 and 1969, and owners of cars from that era will probably be the…

Electric Muscle?

Classic car enthusiasts have taken many different approaches to building, restoring and maintaining vintage iron in order to keep older cars on the road today. Although it seems most enthusiasts are content to restore their vintage cars back to original factory specifications, there are also those who feel the need to “improve” their cars a bit and it is not totally unusual that some would desire to put a modern chassis and drivetrain underneath the skin of an otherwise vintage…

The Grand Old Man of Detroit

As most classic car enthusiasts enjoy studying the history of the automobile and the people who built them, the name Henry Leland should be a lot more recognizable today than it probably is. This becomes apparent when one considers that Henry Leland founded both of the two biggest American luxury car brands that exist today. Although many students of early General Motors (GM) history might remember that Leland was the man responsible for creating the first Cadillac, fewer will likely…
