Here at Original Parts Group (OPGI), we love hearing about your GM Classic restoration projects, from beginning to end. Today, we’re excited to spotlight OPGI Customer Alan Nielson and his sweet 1966 Chevelle Malibu. Alan graciously shared his story with us, highlighting the crucial role OPGI played in bringing his Malibu to its current glory. Without further ado, let’s get to it.

From Factory to Road: The Birth of a ’66 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu

Manufactured in February 1966 at the Fremont, California GM Plant, Alan’s 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu Sport coupe initially boasted a robust 275 horsepower 327 cu. in. V8 engine paired with a “four-on-the-floor” Muncie M20 4-speed manual transmission, representing the core of American Muscle.

Interior

Starting the Journey: Restoring with OPGI

Alan started on a restoration journey with OPGI as his trusted companion. The Regal Red exterior, though not its original paint, still gives off the timeless charm of its era. The interior, faithfully refurbished with new TMI black imitation-leather upholstery, retains its nostalgic appeal with black bucket seats and a center console.

Under the Hood

Under the Hood: Engine Upgrades and Performance Enhancements

Under the hood, the Chevelle houses a finely tuned powerhouse, featuring optimized performance components like forged piston 10:1 compression, Promaxx Performance “angled-plug” 239 CFM aluminum heads, and a robust mid-range hydraulic flat-tappet Comp Cam camshaft. Complementing the engine is an Edelbrock Performer EPS aluminum intake manifold and a Holley 750 CFM double-pumper carburetor, custom-tailored by Performance Carb & Speed of Ontario, CA. Managing ignition is an MSD 6201 Ignition Controller and MSD Pro-Billet Distributor. Breathing through ceramic-coated headers and a 2-1/2” stainless-steel exhaust system equipped with Pypes Performance X-pipe, Street Pro mufflers, and Vibrant Performance resonators, it delivers an aggressive yet balanced exhaust tone. Cooling is efficiently regulated by a deep-core radiator, dual Maradyne Mach-Two electric fans, and a Davies-Craig digital thermostatic fan controller.

OPGI Customer Classic

Enhanced Performance

This Chevelle boasts enhanced handling and safety features to complement its impressive power. Upgraded with UMI Performance lowering springs, QA1 Performance shocks, and solid sway bars, it delivers a thrilling driving experience without compromising comfort. The addition of front disc brakes with a dual master cylinder ensures precise control and stopping power, ensuring a safe journey on any road.

Enthusiasts within the classic car restoration realm recognize the craftsmanship of Ryan “Ryno” Lieberman, the driving force behind Ryno Built Rod and Custom. His remarkable skill set and a string of stunning projects have made a significant mark in this niche community. At the heart of his recent endeavors lies a partnership with OPGI, where RESTOPARTS® plays a pivotal role. Ryno’s collaboration with OPGI brings forth a journey worth sharing—one that resurrects the nostalgia of classic cars in spectacular fashion.

Project One: A Restored Golden Goddess

Restored Cadillac

One standout project that showcased Ryan’s expertise in 2017 was the restoration of an iconic American classic, his 1962 Cadillac De Ville, the “Golden Goddess”. This ambitious undertaking demanded not only impeccable attention to detail but also a profound admiration for classic vehicles. With RESTOPARTS® from OPGI as a crucial ally, Ryan breathed life back into the ’62 De Ville and skillfully restored the essence of a bygone era.

Among the RESTOPARTS®️ items incorporated into this restoration were the 1961-64 Cadillac outside mirror, mirror control knob, inside rearview mirror, tail lamp tail fin lens, gas tank seal, fuel line sending, roof rail weatherstrip screw set, speedometer cable, and speedometer cable rubber seal

Project 2: A Father-Son Bond

Restored El Camino

In 2018, Ryno and his son, Dylan, joined forces for a special project: restoring a 1964 El Camino, which was not only Dylan’s inaugural car but also earmarked for SEMA. Collaborating in Ryno’s Missouri workshop during Dylan’s school breaks, they utilized a crate GM motor 350 to enhance its performance. Taking it for numerous spins, they clocked over 10,000 miles and proudly displayed it at various Midwest events. While Dylan, then 18 and on the cusp of high school graduation, played a significant role in the project, he unfortunately missed the SEMA showcase due to exams. Nevertheless, Ryno proudly showcased the El Camino at the MB Quarts Hifonics booth during SEMA 2018.

When the El Camino was restored, Ryno and Dylan relied on crucial parts from OPGI, such as the RESTOPARTS® ferrule door lock knob, inside mirror support bracket, wiper blade arm, tailgate handle, window crank handle, door window guide roller, vent window handles, along with tail lamp lenses, bezels, reflectors, and more. These components were instrumental in preserving the El Camino’s authentic style. Subsequently, they found a new owner for the El Camino near OPGI in the South Bay of California. The car embarked on a new journey with its new owner, marking a fresh chapter after the heartfelt restoration work by Ryno and Dylan.

Project 3: 1970 Chevelle Debut

Chevelle

For this past SEMA show, Ryno had reached out to us for assistance while knee-deep in his project involving a 1970 Chevelle. The car boasted a robust Roaster Shop chassis, a commanding Whipple-charged engine, and top-tier components. Ryno had emphasized how OPGI could contribute, particularly stressing the need for support and parts for the stock replacement interior, aligning perfectly with his vision for the car’s transformation.

Chevelle

He diligently readied the Chevelle, incorporating a range of RESTOPARTS® provided by OPGI. These included the Dome light kit, sill plates, tail lamp lenses, headliner trim set, sail panel boards, door jamb switch, door jamb louver, door lock knobs, seat piping, window crank handles, armrest base moldings, glove box door and glove box lock set, coat hook, and more. This thorough preparation set the stage for an impressive debut at SEMA, followed by showcases at Dino’s show and Goodguys Scottsdale, and slated to tour various shows throughout 2024.

Through his exceptional expertise and unwavering dedication, Ryno Lieberman, alongside OPGI, has breathed new vitality into classic automotive treasures. From the intricate revival of the ‘Golden Goddess’ Cadillac to the heartfelt journey of the El Camino and the transformative debut of the 1970 Chevelle, each restored classic car stands as a testament to Ryno’s mastery and the invaluable support of OPGI’s parts.

We are excited to provide a recap of Original Parts Group’s fantastic experience at the SEMA Show, which took place from October 31st to November 3rd. We enjoyed showcasing some incredible vehicles and connecting with fellow automotive enthusiasts.

SEMA SHOW

At the SEMA Show, we had the pleasure of meeting Dalton Oneal and displaying his stunning 1967 Cutlass. Dalton was there with his dad, Randy Oneal, and Automotive Mentor Darin Smith from DWS Classics, along with some other friends. Their presence added a personal touch to the event, making it a memorable experience.

We were also thrilled to have our valued customer, Jared Anderson, display his 1966 Cadillac at our booth. Jared, a local Nevada resident, happened to have his remarkable Cadillac stored less than 10 miles from the Convention Center, making it incredibly convenient. He got it cleaned up and drove it to the Convention Center early Sunday to stage it for the Show. It was nice making this dream of displaying his Cadillac in our booth a reality.

The Rust Bros paid a visit to our booth to check out some of our New RESTOPARTS, and it didn’t take long for a crowd to gather. We’ve had a history of collaboration with them and find their passion for automotive restoration just as inspiring as their fans.

SEMA Show

The SEMA Show wouldn’t be complete without some celebrity encounters, and this year was no exception. The lovely Courtney Hansen had a significant following at our booth, with fans lining up to meet her and take photos. Her presence added a touch of glamour to the event, and we were delighted to see the excitement from all her fans.

RESTOPARTS®

In addition to the exciting guests and experiences, OPGI had another reason to celebrate at the SEMA Show. We were honored to accept an ARMO (Automotive Restoration Market Organization) award for our exceptional and brand new for 2023, RESTOPARTS® premium brand 1970-1972 Chevelle, El Camino & Monte Carlo Cowl Induction Air Cleaner. This recognition underscores our commitment to delivering high-quality products to our valued customers, and we are proud to be acknowledged for our dedication to automotive excellence.

After two successful days at the SEMA Show, OPGI finally had the pleasure of reuniting with our friend, Adrienne Janic. OPGI has enjoyed a longstanding collaboration with AJ on numerous marketing efforts, such as hit shows like Overhaulin and Fully Torqued. She graciously took the time to meet and greet her fans, plus she was able to reunite with her dear friend Chip Foose.

SEMA Show

As we walked through the SEMA Show, we were excited to see Ryan “Ryno” Lieberman’s 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle at the MB Quarts booth, showcasing remarkable attention to detail. We also provided several RESTOPARTS® that Ryno needed to help with the final touches.

At the end of a long week, we were greeted by the enthusiastic and vibrant personality of Collete Davis, a professional race car driver, drift driver, and the national TV host of ‘Helping Hands Garage,’ premiering in early 2024 on Speedvision. Meeting her was a pleasure, and we are proud to be part of her upcoming series, where our RESTOPARTS® contribution to a Chevelle takes center stage.

Big thanks to all of you for exploring OPGI’s 2023 SEMA Show highlights with us! We trust you’ve enjoyed our week-long event recap. Keep scrolling for more OPGI classics from the show.
